AUCTION SUCCESS SEES HISTORIC PROPERTY
1 THE COTTAGE, GLEBE FARM, COATHAM MUNDEVILLE
SOLD TO LOCAL PURCHASER
The auction sale was conducted by David Coulson, Broadley & Coulson Chartered Surveyors of Crook and Bishop Auckland on Wednesday 19th January at 6pm in Brafferton Village Hall. The village hall has hosted Broadley & Coulson for previous auctions sales such as Grange Farm Brafferton on behalf of the late Wilfreda Willis.
David informed the audience that the property had been occupied by the late Mr. Robert Lawson for the whole 81 years of his life where people often spend as little as two or three years in a property before moving on. Glebe Farm had been left to his nephew David Lawson a local farmer at Lovesome Hill Farm, who had kept the land to farm in conjunction with his own property but had decided to part with the house.
The audience listened intently as David informed them about the history of the property and read out the auction sale procedures, and informing them that the property was subject to a reserve price. He advised them not to start waving at each other during the proceedings in case they ended up with a property they had not expected upon the fall of the hammer.
As is often the case purchasers were shy to be the first to raise their hand but once bidding started at £50,000 the property was soon bid to £125,000 which was slightly below the reserve price of £130,000. It was eventually sold to a local who had arrived late for the auction thinking that the doors opened at 6.p.m whereas the actual sale had commenced then.
David Coulson a Chartered Surveyor and partner with Broadley & Coulson commented 'I am privileged to have sold the property for my farming client Mr. David Lawson. The location and property are steeped in history and the purchaser has acquire a virtually untouched dwelling and I wish him every success in restoring it to its former high standards'
