One of the region's leading rural property agents David Coulson, senior partner at Broadley and Coulson, based in Crook, County Durham, has been appointed Chair of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) North East Regional Board.

RICS is the pre-eminent organisation of its kind in the property world which helps to set, maintain and regulate professional standards. Its members operate in 146 countries around the world, offering best advice on a diverse range of land, property, construction and related environmental issues.

David has held the position of Vice Chair for three years and succeeds outgoing Chair Michael Henning, a chartered surveyor with Summers Inman, based in Gosforth.

A former Chair of the RICS national Rural Professional Group and currently the organisation' spokesman on rural affairs in the region, David takes over the North East hot seat at an important time for RICS.

He said: "The RICS is in the process of introducing a new governance and business model which will focus on making the organisation more effective and efficient than ever before. RICS is the mark of property professionalism worldwide and we are constantly striving to improve standards."

There are 17 different professional groups within RICS and chartered surveyors carry out hundreds of different roles. They are not only expert in all matters relating to property and construction. They can also offer strategic advice on the economics, valuation, law, technology, finance and management of all the world's physical assets - from the construction of major public buildings to surveying the sea bed, and from managing large property portfolios to auctioning antiques.

Jennifer Welch, operations director for RICS North said: "We are delighted to welcome David on board as RICS North East Chair. As a long-standing and experienced RICS member David has the knowledge, understanding and regional connections to move the organisation forward in line with our future business objectives."

As a partner of Broadley and Coulson, David works with farmers and others in the rural community across the North of England. The company offers a vast array of services, specialising in rural, residential and commercial sectors, acting as auctioneers, land agents, chartered surveyors, estate agents and valuers for a wide variety of clients.
